Gerben Put

Gerben Put · software developer

I build software that flies, travels and runs.

By day I work on systems at the Dutch Tax Administration. By night I build my own projects, from the first design to the server they run on. Everything on this page is live: the numbers below come straight from those projects.

What I build

A pre-flight briefing for your drone

DroneAI

Pick a place and your drone, and see at a glance whether you can fly: a single score from 0 to 100, the best flight windows for the next 48 hours and an outlook for the week.

  • Flight score calibrated to your drone model
  • Winds aloft, gusts, precipitation and visibility
  • GPS satellites and geomagnetic activity (Kp)
  • Next.js 16
  • TypeScript
  • React
  • Open-Meteo
  • satellite.js
  • Leaflet

My travel journal, as postcards

Atlas

A personal travel journal: every trip a postcard with photos, a story and a pin on a spinning globe. With its own editor for adding and editing trips.

  • Interactive globe and map with photo pins
  • Editor with drag-to-sort photos, cover picker and videos
  • Photos resized automatically, GPS data stripped
  • Node.js
  • Express
  • TypeScript
  • PostgreSQL
  • MinIO
  • sharp

02 — How it runs

From my laptop to your screen in two minutes.

No hosting package, but my own VPS that I set up and secured myself. Every push to GitHub is built and rolled out automatically by Coolify, in Docker containers behind HTTPS. Databases run separately, with a backup to off-site storage every night.

Server
Ubuntu 24.04 · 6 cores · 17 GB
Security
SSH keys only, firewall, fail2ban
Backups
nightly to Backblaze B2
Rollback

03 — About

Building it, and then running it myself.

I’m a software developer. After my BSc in Computer Science at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences I worked at ICT Group on business-critical systems for clients such as ProRail, Maasvlakte 2 and several Dutch water authorities. Since 2025 I’ve been working at the Dutch Tax Administration on the applications for motor vehicle tax.

Outside work I build things for myself: tools I actually want to use, around my hobbies of drones and travel. I like doing the whole journey, from design and code to the server it runs on. This site, DroneAI and Atlas all run on my own VPS.
